I like to imagine
I’m in the Earth’s womb,
Still unborn, a parasite
On her body.

I am still in the darkness
Pressing my fists to
Her stomach, trying to feel
A world I can’t yet see.

And in my fits
Of childish rage,
I will ignite her forests;
My fury leaving her
In ashes; my sadness
Washing away her cliffs
Into canyons

And valleys of darkness,
But even in my wake,
She will flourish again.

When I can no longer
Withstand the destruction
I’ve caused, she will expel me
From her body,

Born again for the first time,
Wallowing in the pain
Of newness, of having to breathe
On my own.

And the Earth will smile
Down at me because
There is nothing I can do
To make her hate me.

Because she has made a creature
That can grow, and play, and learn
And love, and that
Is good enough for her.
