“The idea of falling into place, falling into a routine, falling into a nine-to-five it just scares the hell out of me.” –Hayden Maltese

I’m trapped
In my signature
Tying me
To this apartment
A year from now.

If the opportunity
Arose, I’d leave, I think,
Knowing I wouldn’t
Gather the confidence
To tell my landlord.

I’m trapped
In a routine. Work five days
A week, school three,
Maybe, a drink
Or two in between:

A false God that I
Have named Escape.

I’m trapped in a game
Where I score points to
Earn food and housing
And even though I have
The skills to upgrade,
I can’t seem
To beat my boss,

Or at least convince
Another that the game
Is rigged.

I’m trapped
In a graduation gown
Because I can say
I have a bachelor’s now

And because it’s not
Good enough, I sent
Myself back to school
Because poetry won’t pay
The bills.

I’m trapped
On a page
Cutting at myself
With a pen, but only
Ink oozes out, and it’s
Easy to ignore
That 83rd resume,

That 24th submission,

That 15th edit

That blurry face
Behind the keyboard.
