“If I Loved Myself,”

Fiction. Based on a True Self-Love.

This journal entry is inspired by true events. Some of the characters, names, businesses, incidents, and certain locations and events have been fictionalized for dramatic purposes. Any similarity to the name, character or history of any person is entirely coincidental and unintentional

If I loved myself,
I would make a quilt.
I would sew in all
The patterns that make me
Happiest, like opening the windows
On a breezy day, or making salmon
For dinner.

If I loved myself,
I would brush off
The spiderwebs from
My patio chairs and
Write this outside
So I wouldn’t have to get
Vitamin D from a bottle.

If I loved myself,
I’d take more photos
With me in them, so that
My face isn’t a passing thing
That glances at me
From window panes, so
That I can remember
What it feels like
To smile.

If I loved myself,
I’d cook a big stew
And invite everyone over
To enjoy it with me, and when
They asked me how I made it
I’d say with a sprinkle
Of poetry, a dash
Of cicada’s song, and
A few chunks
Of peace.
